Design company wins digital mural commission

Landlords have commissioned a mural depicting life in the Northern Quarter as the centrepiece of a newly refurbished property.

muralManchester-based digital design company Composite Imaging was chosen by Stevenson Estates to create a 15 metre long digital mural for the ground floor of 24 Lever Street, a grade II listed property in the Northern Quarter.

The six-storey building, damaged by smoke and water during a fire three years ago, is undergoing a £1m facelift, which will include ultra-high speed internet access at 1 gigabyte per second for sending and receiving data.

So far the first and second floors have been let to Manchester-based clothing retailer Henleys, which is expanding from its current offices next door.

Composite Imaging founder and managing director, Jackie Anderson, said the photographs for the £13,500 commission had been taken over the past year and would be printed on heavy duty wallpaper

She said: “It's a bit like a big collage; some of it will be images of buildings, some from the Northern Quarter.

“There's architectural details from the listed building and pictures of graffiti, all showing things going on in the Northern Quarter. It's quite a creative area and we wanted the mural to reflect this.”

Anderson said the company, which has an annual turnover of £70,000, had been forced to diversify after losing business during the recession.

Their latest contract, worth £25,000, involves the installation of new headboards in every room of the Princess Hotel on Portland Street.

She said: “We are starting to expand into this area rather than just pictures. Not only do our projects decorate but they also fulfil a function.

“Last year we found that fewer projects went ahead than normal. People just seemed to be more hesitant. But this year we have been really busy, partially because we are expanding, and maybe people are becoming more confident now.”

Atul Bansal, of the Cheetham Hill-based Sheila Bird Group, is designer and project manager at 24 Lever Street and wants the building to stay true to its heritage.

He said: “There's references to architecture in different parts of the Northern Quarter. It's all the things that people who live and work here associate with the area, a young space with attitude and edge.”

The mural is due to be displayed on the wall from May, when the first tenants move in.
