Professional Services critical bedfellows of football industry Professional Services firms are critical bedfellows of the football industry according to former Chief Executive of the F.A Brian Barwick. While many top flight clubs are splashing the cash others struggle to pay their way and Banks, Legal firms, Investment and Insurance companies are a vital part of the extended infrastructure of what Barwick referred to as the remarkable industry that is football. Speaking to over 120 pro.manchester members over lunch at the Radisson Edwardian last week Mr Barwick said that the profile of the modern football game had never been higher with media attention focused on clubs off the pitch as much as on it and that associating your brand with a club or a player can be a marketing dream come true. Mr Barwick also gave an insight into the professional world he has been involved in for over thirty years, having been Head of Sport at both BBC and ITV, he gave such personalities as Lineker, Hansen and Gabby Logan their first big breaks as broadcasters and was the man behind using Nessun Dorma as the theme for the BBC’s 1990 World Cup Coverage. He is also of course the former Chief Executive of the Football Association a role which he said was “Exciting, frustrating, difficult, exhilarating, stressful” and a job he “simply loved” Having left the F.A in 2008 Mr. Barwick now lectures at Liverpool University on their Masters in Football Industry Course alongside teaching at a new learning facility, University College of Football Business based at Turf Moor, home to Burnley F.C. He is also an Ambassador for Soccerex sponsors of the pro.manchester lunch and who will hold their football conference in Manchester from March 30th to 31st.
