Successful cities will be smarter cities Manchester needs to be a ‘smart middleweight city with greater independance’ according to Sir Howard Bernstein. Sir Howard who was giving his annual address to over 180 pro·manchester members at Stock Restaurant yesterday said that Manchester had the potential to establish itself as a smart middleweight city but investment was needed in people and infrastructure. Investment in growth for the city was key in Sir Howard’s address as he set a target of creating a £1bn investment fund over the coming years he said that city had already adopted policies moving away from dependance on grants and focused on the investment in projects including the Metrolink extension, Airporty City, Media City and Corridor Manchester. “We have always been renown for ambition and our practical approach to delivery and change. Referring to a study by Goldman Sachs Jim O’Neill, Sir Howard said that by 2025 one third of the developed cities will have left the top 600 cities in the world with 100 of these being replaced in signifance by cities from China signalling a shift in economic power in favour of the Far East and away from Europe.
